Spring Conference Focuses on PR and Social Media

Each year IABC Utah and PRSA get together and host a Spring Conference where communications professionals from all over the state of the Utah are able to receive information on the latest trends in our field. This year’s conference was held on March 20 at the Marriott City Center in downtown Salt Lake City and attracted more than 125 attendees. The half-day meeting was well worth the $85 and time away from the office. For those of you who were not there, you missed some great discussions. Lucky for you, an overview of the day is available here. For those of you who were in attendance, feel free to add your comments and perspectives on the day. Let’s not just file this in the back of our minds, but keep the discussions going. After all, social media is the topic of choice these days in our industry.

Social Media, Blogs, Blogs, and more Blogs¼br> To start things off, Jeri Cartwright of Cartwright Communications was recognized for underwriting the event. Without her contribution, we may not have had such a successful day. Jeri said that she really cares about change going on in our profession and started a blog last year (http://mediarelations.blogs.com/), separate from her business to discuss these changes. Jeri’s blog is primarily about media relations and she welcomes guests to contribute.
¼br> Laura Ries, the keynote speaker of the conference blogs about brands. You can read her blog at http://originofbrands.com.

During the discussion panel, I learned that Deseret Morning News has sports blogs about the Jazz, local colleges, and high school sports. Sports news is huge in Utah. They recently started a Real Salt Lake blog and it was reported to be the most visited of all their sports blogs. You can read the blogs at http://www.deseretnews.com/sports/.

There was also a mention of reporters from local TV news stations creating MySpace pages to interact with their viewers.

Matthew Reinbold of Vox Pop Design was one of the panel participants and is the Cofounder/Principal of the Blogging for Business (B4B) Conference, a blog about building better business through transparency and communication.

Laura Ries Discusses the Importance of PR

“To be successful, you have to own a word in the mind”
- Laura Ries

Laura Ries, the keynote speaker for this year’s event, is the President of Ries & Ries, a marketing strategy firm based in Atlanta. Laura discussed the myth of advertising—that it builds brands. She says it does not build brands and that the main strategy for most companies is to launch their new product with an ad campaign. They throw a bunch of money at the campaign and hope sales will take off. It rarely does.

A lot of what Laura discussed may be found in her book, The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR. It has the silly sock puppet from the Pets.com ads on the cover.

Brands start of slow and “reach everybody” advertising campaigns don’t work. Laura discussed how various companies launched typical advertising campaigns only to fall short of expected sales.

She continued with how PR gets brands recognized because brands are recognized by people and “people are sheep”. If a friend tells you to use a product, you are more likely to go out and buy it. Word-of-mouth is the most powerful medium. Laura said that the role of PR is to get the first mouth talking. She discussed how Red Bull, Starbucks, The Body Shop, and Google are all PR successes.

These companies are successful because PR established their credibility. Advertising re-enforces the brand and accelerates it. She said that the Cheesecake Factory never advertises and is known by word-of-mouth. Compared to advertising, PR is not saying you’re great, it’s someone else saying you’re great.

Additionally, Laura believes that if you want your company to be famous, you have to make your CEO famous too. Ralph Lauren, Andy Grove of Intel, and Michael Dell of Dell Computers were some of the examples she used.

A brand should strive to own words in the mind of the consumer. Laura explained that successful brands are attached to certain words. When you think of a word, a certain brand or company comes to mind:

Organic Groceries = Whole Foods
The Real Thing = Coca Cola
Internet Searches = Google
Internet Auctions = eBay
Always Low Prices = WalMart
Safety = Volvo

This even plays out in the political arena and entertainment industry. Laura discussed how Hillary Clinton tried to attach her campaign with the word “experience”. Burack Obama owns “change”.

Laura said the way to get famous is to own a word. Some successful celebrities are described as:

Wise Guy = Bruce Willis
Bad Boy = Jack Nicholson
The Boss = Bruce Springsteen
Pretty Woman = Julia Roberts

Laura’s presentation really hit home the importance of pubic relations in building the brand.

“Organizational Gossip” - Dr. Susan Hafen, Professor, Weber State University

IABC Utah presents “Organizational Gossip.” The meeting will be held April 22, 2008 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Westminster College, Special Events Room, Dolores Dore Eccles Health, Wellness, & Recreation Center (West of the Shaw Student Center), 1840 South 1300 East Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gossip is an indisputable fact of life in most workplaces. Susan Hafen, a professor at Weber State University, has conducted research on workplace gossip and found that some forms of gossip in the workplace might not be such a bad thing, especially if organizations can tap into the positive components of gossip as a tool to create organizational heroes or to circulate cautionary tales about the consequences of breaking rules.

She suggests human resource departments often function as a gossip-information revolving door, framing information as gossip or gossip as information, depending on the situation and the employees involved. In short, management uses gossip, just as employees do, to promote favorable images and to have an “ear to the ground.” When gossip turns negative, the question is not “how to eliminate it?” but “what is it telling us?”.

Her latest research on gender differences in workplace gossip focuses on six different functions of gossip and how men and women “do it differently.” What she hopes to learn from future research is not just how gendered gossip works in organizations, but how to use an ethics of gossip.
